Sepphoris – “The Ornament of Galilee”

Sepphoris or Zippori was a very beautiful city. The famous Roman historian, Flavius Josephus, has called it “The Ornament of Galilee”. It was also known as the “city of peace”. Located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, it had been a very prosperous city as well as the capital of Galilee. This prosperity dates back to the time of Anna and Joachim, Our Lady’s parents who lived here. In fact, it is thought that Joseph and Jesus would have brought their carpentry goods to the city to sell as Nazareth is located so near to Sepphoris. You can read more about Sepphoris here and an explanation of the archeological excavations here.
